February is Teen Dating Violence (DV) Prevention and Awareness Month – a national effort to raise awareness about abuse in teen and young adult relationships and promote programs to help young women and men establish healthy relationships.

Program Topics:

  • What is teen dating violence?
  • Who is at risk for teen dating violence?
  • Why is dating violence a public health problem?
  • How does dating violence affect health?
  • How can we prevent teen dating violence?

Did You Know:

  • 1 in 10 high school students have been purposely hit by a boyfriend/girlfriend.
  • 1 in 4 high school girls are the victims of physical or sexual abuse.
  • 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
  • Violent behavior typically begins between 12-18 years of age.
  • Only 33% of teens actually report abuse.
  • 81% of parents don’t believe that teen dating violence is an issue.

What’s Happening to our Young Women?

  • 1 of every 3 TV commercials sends “attractive importance” messages to women.
  • The average woman is exposed to 400-600 ads per day.
  • 69% of 5th  – 12th grade girls said magazine pictures influenced their ideal body image.
  • 47% wanted to lose weight to be like the girls in the pictures.
  • Despite the knowledge and ease of computer graphic programs and Photoshop, teenagers still believe what they see in magazines and on TV is “real” and the “ideal body image.”
  • The #1 wish for girls ages 11 – 17 is “to be thinner”.
  • 80% of 10-year olds have reported being on a diet.
  • At any given time, 50% of women are “dieting”.
  • Today’s fashion models weigh 23% less than an average, healthy, female should – yet they are still the “ideal”.
  • Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents.
  • 95% of people with eating disorders are girls/women between 12 – 25.8 years of age.
  • Over half of teenage girls engage in unhealthy weight loss behaviors.
