The Importance of Giving Back

by René Hinz, AGAF President and CEO

With all of the madness of “Black Friday”, and “Cyber Monday”, it is sometimes difficult for us to remember that not everyone has the disposable income to camp outside stores a week before a sale so they can buy more big screen TVs. The holidays can make us focus on material things and and we forget about the things that really matter and are necessities for survival.

Too many children are going to bed hungry. Too many families have both parents working full-time jobs but yet they can’t pay their bills. Too many people have medical bills and prescription medications that are simply so expensive they are not within the reach of the family budget. Too many women and children are living in homes with abuse.

That’s why I am a huge fan of Giving Tuesday. It is a smack in the face of the reality that too many people living among us don’t have enough. And I am not talking about another big screen TV, or the latest iPhone. I am talking about basic needs – food, clothing, shelter, and being safe.

Giving Tuesday is a chance for everyone to give back to a cause, a movement, or a nonprofit that has a made a difference in their lives and strives to help others have a better quality of life.

I started The Arizona Girls’ Athletic Foundation and AGAF Instructional and Recreational Volleyball League to help girls play the game I love regardless of their athletic and financial abilities. But volleyball is just a game. That’s why AGAF started programs to provide education and awareness about domestic violence and raise money for crisis shelters for Chrysalis (www.noabuse.org). That’s why AGAF raises money to fight breast cancer, why we help work on programs to help girls feel better about their bodies, and why we will launch our first food drive on Saturday, December 6, 2014 to help the Paradise Valley Emergency Food Bank feed the families in our own community that don’t have enough to eat. It’s not a lot, but it is the least that we can do to help our volleyball players and their families, and those that need it the most in our community.

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi.

This quote is my inspiration. And it can be yours too. Don’t wait for someone else to change the world – go out into the world and do it.

Please take a moment on Giving Tuesday to donate or volunteer with the charities, causes, and nonprofits that strive to make a change in our world.

Thank you for giving back.
